Calm boundaries during tantrums

A practical way to keep everyone safe, acknowledge feelings and hold a limit without a power struggle.

A tantrum is usually a sign that a child has run out of coping capacity, not a good moment for a lesson. Your first job is safety and steadiness.

In the moment

  • Move dangerous objects and use few words.
  • Say: ‘You really wanted that. I won’t let you hit.’
  • Stay nearby if your child accepts your presence; give space if that helps them settle.
